Salmon Oil can lower your triglycerides by 20% to 50%

Patients with hypertriglyceridemia benefit from treatment with 3 to 4 g/d of DHA and EPA, a dosage that lowers triglyceride levels by 20% to 50%.
- The Mayo Clinic

The Mayo Clinic just released the results from 3 large clinical trials studying Omega-3 fatty acids on cardiovascular disease. These trials showed reductions in cardiovascular events of 19% to 45%. These findings suggest that intake of omega-3 fatty acids, whether from dietary sources or fish oil supplements, should be increased, especially in those with or at risk for coronary artery disease.

The target DHA and EPA (Omega-3 fattry acids) consumption levels are about 1 g/d (grams per day) for those with known coronary artery disease and at least 500 mg/d for those without disease. Patients with hypertriglyceridemia (high triglycerides) benefit from treatment with 3 to 4 g/d of DHA and EPA, a dosage that lowers triglyceride levels by 20% to 50%. Although 2 meals of oily fish per week can provide 400 to 500 mg/d of DHA and EPA, secondary prevention patients and those with hypertriglyceridemia must use fish oil supplements if they are to reach 1 g/d and 3 to 4 g/d of DHA and EPA, respectively.

Our complete salmon oil includes high quantities of the Omega-3s EPA and DHA plus 6 other essential fatty acids found in Alaska salmon. It also contains oil soluble nutrients like vitamins, antioxidants, bio-flavinoids, and carotenoids. While not as well known as Omega-3, these oil soluble micro-nutrients play an essential role in our bodies.

Diet plays a huge part in lowering triglycerides.

If you have high triglycerides (hypertriglyceridemia), then you need to substitute monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats —such as those found in canola oil and olive oil — for saturated fats.

The American Medical Association recommends that you “substitute fish high in omega-3 fatty acids instead of meats high in saturated fat like hamburger. Fatty fish like mackerel, lake trout, herring, sardines, albacore tuna and salmon are high in omega-3 fatty acids.”

While we believe the healthiest (and tastiest) way for a person to take natural fish oil is to consume more oily cold water fish like Wild Alaska Salmon, we know that not everyone has access to quality fish, or even the desire to eat fish as frequently as they should. For those people, our 100% Salmon Oil supplements are a viable alternative.

There are no set recommendations for EPA and DHA but numerous studies have suggested certain amounts depending on your goal. Each of our softgels contain 1000mg of salmon oil, about 250mg of which is EPA and DHA.

  • To maintain good health: 500 mg/d or 2 sofgels

  • Lower Triglycerides: 2-4 g/d or 8-16 softgels
  • Reduce inflammatory from Rheumatoid Arthritis: >3 g/d or 12 softgels

Because of the risk of bleeding from omega-3 fatty acids at doses greater than 3 grams per day, a physician should be consulted prior to starting treatment with supplements.
